Layar app for Blackberry
Challenge
A few months ago I was lucky to be working as part of the UX team at the Layar office in Amsterdam. The mission at Layar was to make the Augmented Reality app accessible to more users, and my responsibility was creating interaction design for Layar for Blackberry.
Solution
Interaction design and user testing, participating in concepting brainstorms for Layar.
Process
- Analyze Blackberry UI guidelines and researching a lot of best in class Blackberry apps
- Creating a Fireworks Blackberry mockup template
- Creating personas
- Creating wireframes in close cooperation with visual design and tech team in the Ukraine
- Protoyping and user testing with Blackberry users – on an iPad with TAP, a great prototyping tool by UNITiD
Download the Fireworks Blackberry mockup template or use the – fairly limited – Blackberry UI guidelines for extra information. If you want to do prototyping for mobile, learn more about TAP (Touch Application Prototypes)
Impact analysis Android
Challenge
Impact analysis for an innovative mobile service of a large supermarket in the Netherlands. With this app you can create a shopping list, find recipes and view your purchase history. The client wanted to know the opportunities and risks when making the iPhone app available for the then young Android platform.
Solution
Impact analysis and initial interaction design. I provided an overview of the current Android statistics, risks of fragmentation and initial interaction designs. The client could now make the informed decision to go ahead with the project.
Process
- Research into Android opportunities and risks
- Sketching out different solutions for navigation and detailed page designs.
- Review solutions with the creative director, client and developers
- Visual design by MUSE
Additionally, I was involved in extra design work for both iPhone and Android and completed a SCRUM training as part of the project. Results outside the project for the client was a presentation at Design by Fire Cafe and sharing an Android mockup template with the design community.

Unique vintage fashion platform
Challenge
A large online marketplace wanted an online fashion shop for vintage designer fashion that enables both buying and selling. The shop should be extremely easy to use and appeal to a young, mostly female audience.
Solution
A simple and clear homepage introducing the concept of Hippas, and a shop in which users can easily search and browse for fashion items.
Process
- Comparing various online fashion shops with the client to get requirements clear
- Sketching high level interaction design and specifying detailed design in wireframes. Design was done in a number of iterations
- Visual design by Resoluut
Tempo Team
Concept for mobile
Pitch
Tempo Team asked for ideas to translate their website to the mobile platform. This concept was designed with users of iPhone, Android and other mobile devices in mind.
Process
- Creating personas
- Creating user journey
- Wireframes for iPhone, Android and mobile website
DSM Dyneema
End-user and licensee portal
Challenge
Redesign of the Dyneema website, and design of a new licensee portal to promote the Dyneema product.
Solution
In this project I worked with a sr. interaction designer. We focused on the value proposition of DSM Dyneema with elements such as properties comparison and licensee program benefits. A clear navigation and visual examples together promote the Dyneema product.
Process
- Cardsorting session with stakeholders
- Creation of sitemap based on cardsorting session
- Sketching high level interaction design
- Specifying detailed design in wireframes
- Visual design by Resoluut
The project was completed working with a sr. interaction designer.

MIMOA
Prototype for iPhone app
Challenge
MIMOA, or My Modern Architecture is an online architecture guide. MIMOA is free and open for everyone to contribute. MIMOA was interested in developing an iPhone app, so we needed to define what features would be needed for users of MIMOA on the road.
Solution
Together with MIMOA we did a brainstorm to define what features would be needed to make the MIMOA user happy. As a result of the user journey we came up with several features such as making architecture guides available offline, selecting a hotel or restaurant which is interesting from an architecture perspective, and adding projects from your mobile device.
- Process
- Creation of personas
- Creation of user journey
- Sketching interaction design
- Creating prototype to persuade potential investors
In later stages the MIMOA app has been developed with MAPPS and has been succesfully launched in June 2010. Result: MIMOA in the App Store
Project Browser
Case study for Master thesis at PSAU
(2006) The Project Browser was the case for my Master thesis at the Professional School of Arts Utrecht. The Project Browser was part of my research and design internship at TNO Human Factors. Development of the Project Browser was initiated by the Augmented Multi-Party Interactions Project (AMI), a 3 year European project concerned with research and development of technology that will augment communications between individuals and groups of people.
